Fault Diagnosis

 
Symptom: Engine Lacks Power  
Cause Remedy
  1. Worn internal engine components
  2. Fuel system defective or incorrectly adjusted
  3. Low boost
  4. Damaged turbocharger
  5. Air filter blocked
  6. Air pipe into turbo restricted
  7. Air pipe from filter to turbo leaking
  8. Air pipe from turbo to inlet manifold leaking
  9. Ignition timing incorrectly adjusted
  10. Blockage in exhaust system
  11. Exhaust gas leaking from manifold
  1. Repair engine as required
  2. Replace or adjust faulty components
  3. Check wastegate and actuator operation
  4. Determine reason for failure, replace turbo
  5. Replace air filter
  6. Replace pipe
  7. Check hoses for splits and tighten hose clips
  8. Check hoses and intercooler for leaks and replace
  9. Check and reset
  10. Replace silencers or catalytic converter
  11. Replace gasket or manifold-check bolts for tightness
Sympton: Turbo Noisy  
Cause Remedy
  1. Damaged turbocharger
  2. Air pipe into turbo restricted
  3. Air pipe from filter to turbo leaking
  4. Air pipe from turbo to inlet manifold leaking
  5. Carbon build-up in turbo bearing housing
  6. Blockage in exhaust system
  7. Exhaust gas leaking from manifold
  1. Determine reason for failure - repair or replace turbo
  2. Replace pipe
  3. Check hoses for splits and tighten hose clips
  4. Check hoses and intercooler for leaks and replace
  5. Check engine oil and filter- replace turbo
  6. Replace silencers or catalytic converter
  7. Replace gasket or manifold - check bolts for tightness
Sympton: Excessive Engine Oil Consumption  
Cause Remedy
  1. Worn internal engine components
  2. Fuel system defective or incorrectly adjusted
  3. Damaged turbocharger
  4. Air filter blocked
  5. Air pipe into turbo restricted
  6. Incorrect operation of crankcase
    breather system
  7. Carbon build up in turbo bearing housing
  8. Air pipe from turbo to inlet manifold leaking
  9. Restricted oil drain pipe from turbocharger
  1. Repair engine as required
  2. Replace or adjust faulty components
  3. Determine reason for failure - replace turbocharger
  4. Replace air filter
  5. Replace pipe
  6. Check breather hoses, pipes and one way valves as
    per manufacturers recommendations
  7. Change engine oil and filter - replace turbo
  8. Check hoses and intercooler for leaks and replace
  9. Replace oil drain pipe
Sympton: Blue Exhaust Smoke  
Cause Remedy
  1. Worn internal engine components
  2. Fuel system defective or incorrectly adjusted
  3. Damaged turbocharger
  4. Air filter blocked
  5. Air pipe into turbo restricted
  6. Restricted oil drain pipe from turbochanger
  7. Incorrect operation of crankase
    breather system
  8. Carbon build-up in turbo bearing housing
  1. Repair engine as required
  2. Replace or adjust faulty components
  3. Determine reason for failure - replace turbo
  4. Replace air filter
  5. Replace pipe
  6. Replace oil drain pipe
  7. Check breather hoses, pipes and one way valves
    as per manufacturers recommendations
  8. Change engine oil and filter - replace turbo
